Hi, I’m Richard, an eating disorder specialist therapist.

Working with me, you can recover from anorexia, orthorexia, bulimia or binge eating disorder.

Meet Bonnie, a guide dog that I’m sponsoring.

I specialise in eating disorders because I’ve been there. I know what it’s like for food to dominate your thoughts. I know what it’s like to be constantly worried about how other people see you. I know what it’s like to believe that you’re not good enough. It’s a lonely life!

We won’t only focus on your eating disorder – that isn’t effective. We will look at all of the underlying causes that triggered your eating disorder and keep it going now.

Common underlying causes are:

  • Low self-esteem – believing that we’re not good enough is a prime motivator for trying to be good enough through how we look or being perfect,
  • Trauma – I work with many clients who have been abused, sexually assaulted or raped. Sometimes it’s a one-off incident, other times it’s prolonged abuse,
  • Grief and bereavement – losing someone and not know how to cope is one of the most challenging experiences that we can face. It’s really common to use food to try to cope with what feels like an insurmountable loss,
  • Stress – life is stressful. Really really stressful! Food can help us feel like we are in control of our lives, that controlling food means that we’ve got things under control.
We will work together using a personalised combination of:
  • Practical skills and tools that you can use to feel more in control of life and able to cope with life stress,
  • Trauma-specific ways of working to help you process and overcome any traumas that you have experienced,
  • Support, understanding and compassion,
  • Ways of increasing your self-esteem and reducing anxiety, depression and perfectionism.
